In 1992, a monumental bust of a sacred imperial nude, one of only three known to exist, was discovered on the archaeological site of Alba la Romaine. It is estimated to be dated between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century AD.

The quality of its execution and technique makes it a unique archaeological object as well as an exceptional piece of art. Sculpted in Greek Pentelic marble, the same marble used for the Acropolis sculptures in Athens, this statue of the heroized emperor is the only one in Gaul (ancient France) that has been discovered in a religious context.

MuséAl, the archaeological museum of Alba la Romaine, carried out an experimental study aimed at re erecting the statue in order to present it to the public. But how can we install a pedestal without weakening or breaking the statue?

The museum permitted the realisation of an exceptional study around the pedestal of the bust by bringing together a number of techniques in unprecedented ways: using 3D reconstitution, measuring the centre of gravity, analysing material to complete a project of reversible support for the bust.

A true technical prowess, the re construction will be accompanied by a cross disciplinary exhibition to put the piece of art into context.

Thus, the project Sacré Mâle explores as a whole, modern and ancient nudes as well as sculpted, painted and photographed nudes through a dozen of works of art, including loans from the Musée d'Orsay photographic collection, which question us about the iconography of power through the characters of male heroes from ancient times to the present day.

The works presented and exhibited echo the monumental statue in its ancient context and give us new keys to understanding with a contemporary resonance.
