For the first edition of the Offscreen fair, the gallery Les filles du calvaire, Paris, presents a solo exhibition of the artist Kenny Dunkan, to be discovered from October 20 to October 23, 2023, at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild. 

 

Kenny Dunkan regularly draws on the visual culture of the Caribbean, and in particular that of carnivals, periods of social, cultural and political role reversal, to develop a body of work that addresses the French colonial heritage and the persistence of its modes of representation.

 

To do this, the artist often starts with his own black body, which he stages through various media, from video to performance, including sculpture and assembly.

 

A 2014 graduate of the École nationale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, he won the ADAGP Plastic Arts prize at the Salon de Montrouge in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, Kenny Dunkan was a resident at the Villa Medici, Académie de France in Rome. In 2018, he participated in the opening exhibition of Lafayette Anticipations. Three years later, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Les filles du calvaire in Paris and joined the CNAP collections the same year with the installation "COSMOS".

 

He became a laureate of the first Reiffers Art Initiatives mentorship, which then presented his work at the first exhibition of the programme at the Studio des Acacias by Mazarine.

 

OFFSCREEN is a new artistic event dedicated to artists who work with images in the form of installations, still or moving images. A few steps from the Champs-Elysées, OFFSCREEN will take place in a sublime Hôtel Particulier with a neo-classical Haussmannian façade and splendid gardens.

The Galerie Les filles du calvaire opened in 1996 in the Marais in an industrial building of 300m2 on two levels sheltered by a large glass roof. The programme considers all the practices of contemporary art which intersect and enrich each other (painting, sculpture, video, photography and installations), with confirmed or emerging artists often using a plural style of writing. Their works are consistent with our choice to offer committed points of view and diverse insights into reality and the world of ideas.
