Piet Moget & Patrick Sauze: Carte blanche at L.A.C

Curator: Layla Moget. Exhibition 27.04 → 22.06.24

Opening 27.04.24, 5pm → 9pm.

From 27.04 to 22.06.2024, L’ahah is hosting an exhibition conceived by Layla Moget, co-founder of L.A.C., a contemporary art venue in Sigean.

The exhibition brings together two painters who, at first glance, appear to be opposites. The first, Piet Moget (1928-2015), painted atmospheric, hazy works outside. The second, Patrick Sauze (1965-), creates tautness with monochrome space at its centre and a shape that toys with the canvas outline.

"The confrontation between two painters, one figurative, Piet Moget, the other abstract, Patrick Sauze, takes us back to the tension between realism and abstraction that has animated art since the beginning of the 20th century" (Emmanuel Latreille, extract from the text written for the exhibition).

Layla Moget was born on 18 October 1952 in Svenljunga, Sweden. She lives and works in Sigean, France. A graduate of the École du Louvre in Paris, she began her career as an exhibition curator with her father, Piet Moget. After her father's death in 2015, Layla took over running the L.A.C. She has also curated exhibitions at l'Aspirateur in Narbonne, where she exhibited the artist Erró for the inauguration of the venue in 2013.

Piet Moget was born on 24 May 1928 in The Hague and died on 13 December 2015 in Port-la-Nouvelle. He joined the School of Fine Arts in The Hague in 1946. In 1991, together with his wife, Mary Schallenberg, and his daughter, Layla Moget, he founded the Lieu d'Art Contemporain - L.A.C in Sigean. Piet Moget has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in France and abroad. His work is part of French and international public collections, notably those of the FRAC Île-de-France, the FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon and the Museum of The Hague. His work has been the subject of several publications.

Patrick Sauze was born in 1965 in Casablanca, Morocco. He lives and works in Narbonne, France. His work has been shown in a number of solo and group exhibitions in France and abroad. He has had numerous exhibitions at the L.A.C in Sigean, where he has also worked alongside Layla Moget. His work can be found in a number of public collections, including those of the FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon, the Musée des Abattoirs and the Artothèque in Strasbourg. Patrick Sauze is represented by Galerie Jean-Paul Barrès in Toulouse.

Exhibition: the L.A.C is a contemporary art gallery that was created in Sigean (Aude) in 1991 by painter Piet Moget (1928-2015) and his daughter Layla Moget. In a former wine cellar covering more than 1,800 m2, its exceptional collection reflects the insatiable curiosity of a place created by an artist for artists. It includes works by Robert Morris, Fred Sandback, Geer Van Velde, Karel Appel, Bram Van Velde, Olivier Debré, Frank Stella, Walter De Maria, Yves Klein and many others.
