CHARLES POLLOCK AT THE Galerie ETC FROM 11 OCTOBER TO 1 DECEMBER 2019
ETC Gallery is very pleased to present Charles Pollock's work for the first time in Paris.
Charles Cecil Pollock was born on 1902 in Denver, Colorado. As the eldest of five brothers, he nurtured an interest in Mexican art, particularly in the mural work of Orozco and Rivera. In 1926, Pollock left Los Angeles and settled in New York where Jackson, his younger brother, will join him few years later. They studied together under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. From 1950 to the end of the 60's, he teached calligraphy, engraving, and graphism at the Michigan State College. From 1954, his work swings between lyrism and colored abstraction close to colorfield painting.
In 1971, he moved, with his wife and daughter, to Paris, where he spent the last seventeen years of his life. Charles Pollock died on May 8, 1988 in Paris.
First passionate by calligraphy which he teached all his life, he draws inspiration in this discipline : he shows his taste for cosmic symbols and hermetic signs all over his paintings. These shapes become then free, color more profound and dense before rebounding, bright and poetic.
Known in the international scene after a retrospective at Venise Guggenheim in 2015, these works from the 1960's are presented, for the first time in Paris in an individual exhibition at the ETC gallery and in close collaboration with the Charles Pollock Archives, conducted by Sylvia and Francesca Pollock, widow and daughter of the artist.
A catalogue with a text of Maurice Benhamou is published by the gallery for this exhibition.
Furthermore, the Galerie ETC is delighted to announce that it will be taking part in the Galeristes Art Fair between October 18th and October 20th 2019 at the Carreau du Temple.
Works by the gallery’s top artists will be on show: Claude CHAUSSARD, Jean DEGOTTEX, Lars FREDRIKSON, Charles C. POLLOCK, Max WECHSLER, Claire CHESNIER.
The exhibition opening will take place on the 17th Ocotber from 6-10pm, invitation only
