Jean Degottex and Albert Hirsch at the Galerie ETC from 24 May to 18 July 2019
ETC gallery is pleased to present, from May 23 to July 18, 2019, the works of two exceptional visual artists : Jean Degottex and Albert Hirsch. Completely in line with a certain sensitive minimalism defended by the ETC gallery, the sculptures and slates of Albert Hirsch begin a dialogue with the work of Jean Degottex.
" Faithful to its taste for a rather minimalist and sensitive art, ETC gallery has chosen for its next exhibition two renowned artists : Jean Degottex and Albert Hirsch, both prone to the expression of the little and shown together because of their thirst for mixing the space of their works with those around them.
The paintings of Jean Degottex presented by ETC gallery are, among other things, «Reports» of large size (one blue, the other earth) of 1977 whose freedom gives a little dizzy. They create around them in a transfigured space, an atmosphere of serenity and fullness.
In this painter, aesthetics and ethics are not separable.
Space, inert in itself, is somehow put under tension, that of art.
Another canvas, also large format but back from 1962, «Ecritures sur fond noir» comes, in front of the «Reports», correct the very common error of judgment that made Degottex a gestural painter, while he always was a painter of the empty and that the gesture was only a means to reach it. It is true that his gestures have in themselves a grace.
The works of sculptor Albert Hirsch are also from different periods. First a version of the «Grand Eploiement» that enthralled the poet René Char and has a subtle way of penetrating the space.
A large iron sculpture made of three vertical curves barely curved. Long vacuum cracks between them. They are dancing and hold a secret.
Small slate wall sculptures feverishly question this immemorial material. "
