Carpenters Workshop Gallery PRESENTS A SOLO SHOW BY WENDELL CASTLE AT PAD LONDON
PAD LONDON 2015
FROM 14 TO 18 OCTOBER
This year at PAD London (Pavilion of Art and Design) Carpenters Workshop Gallery will exhibit a solo show of works by American artist Wendell Castle.
The four works will all be bronze seating sculptures recently finished at the gallery’s new research and development space Carpenters Workshop | Roissy, in suburban Paris.
The series of works have been designed for a soon to open exhibition at MAD (Museum of Art and Design) New York, entitled ‘Wendell Castle: Remastered’.
The pieces are each created in a limited edition of 8 works plus 4 artist’s proofs. As they are all possible as indoor or outdoor sculptures, the gallery will present them in a garden setting with vegetation as the scenography.
Wendell Castle’s latest works incorporate striking and imposing organic forms juxtapose with seemingly weightless structures, despite their creation in solid bronze.
Here Wendell Castle takes a critical look at the first decade of his artistic production, revisiting its most emblematic achievements of the 1960s, through a contemporary prism as well as new and digital techniques (3D modelling, computer-guided metal milling...).
A self-reflexive approach to examining this crucial period during which the sculptural practices of the artist affirmed his status as pioneer designer, laying the foundation for the longevity of his career.
ABOUT | WENDELL CASTLE
The artist creates unique pieces that often go beyond the traditional boundaries of design, placing him in a niche that has puzzled those wanting to make a specific distinction between designers and sculptors. His furniture designs for residential clients, public spaces and a number of churches represent a unique exploration of the qualities and possibilities of wood and fibreglass, experienced at a high level of craftsmanship.
He is now amongst the pantheon of great contemporary designers, whose work can be found in the permanent collections of over 40 museums and cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museum of Modern Art in New York and The White House, Washington.
CARPENTERS WORKSHOP GALLERY
COLLECTING DESIGN
Carpenters Workshop Gallery transcends classical borders in terms of art and design. Its proposal stands just at the intersection of these two universes: reaching precisely a symbiosis of art and design.
Carpenters Workshop Gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and already established artists and designers going outside their traditional territories of expression.
The gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limited edition works exhibited. The choices are guided by the research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance; a relevance that appears as an evidence.
